Project Overview

We have the pleasure of working alongside Latino Arts Inc. and Grohmann Museum to plan and curate the preview for a joint exhibit that focuses on the 1960’s farm workers labor movement. This collaborative effort seeks to educate the public about the movement as a whole, as well as the effects it had on family life and education for migrant workers in Wisconsin while also encouraging the exploration of Mexican-American and Latino culture through the lens of history and art. It is to tell the story in such a way that humanizes the workers â€“ allowing the viewers to better understand the movement and greater appreciate those who partook in advancing the cause. Milwaukee is well known as one of the most segregated cities in America, and yet, there is a rich and diverse history, which we hope will help to bridge the gaps and better connect our communities.

The goal of this project is to illustrate how much power people are capable of wielding, as the farm workers of the 60s and 70s did, how it was a family centered movement, and how much change in labor laws as well as in education it brought that can still be seen today. We also hope to show the interconnected nature of this movement with other very influential and important civil and social movements.
