THE CAFE

We wish to redesign the interior of the cafe to be more functional and beautiful for the children of Highland Community School.

SPACE SAVING

The cafe itself is an incredibly small and cluttered space. Sabrina researched ways to better organize the space behind the kitchen to ensure that things are nearby when students need them and are easy to locate. She created a diorama which showcased all the ways storage can be creatively implemented in the cafe. We brought this diorama with us when we went to Highland to meet with the students for community engagement, and the students really liked it. We hope to put on another workshop or possibly a take hope project where students can create their own physical depiction of what they envision the cafe looking like after completion of our project.

INTERIOR DESIGN

Elisa researched ways we can make the cafe feel and look more like a real cafe. She proposed revamping, reorganizing, repurposing, and reaching out to the students to better the current cafe design. We wish to do as much work with the materials already available to us in the cafe in order to minimize the costs of this project.

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL FURNITURE

With the cafe being so small, Sabrina wanted to explore the possibility of multi-use furniture. This is furniture that can be converted from one thing to another such as from table to chair or furniture that also contains storage opportunities whether within itself or to be stored away easily. This would require us to build a lot of furniture from scratch as such furniture is incredibly expensive. We believe that with the help of a carpenter parent at Highland this could become a reality.
