THE GREENHOUSES

We wish to make the greenhouses at Highland Community School accessible and functional during the frigid winters in Milwaukee.

CONSTRUCTION

Matthew researched the different types of greenhouses, how to keep a greenhouse warm during the cold months, and what can be grown in the variable climate of Milwaukee, WI. Currently at Highland, there are hoop house greenhouses in place. We plan to look into heating them using a layer of bubble wrap to increase insulation, ensuring there is no heat leakage around the doors, and even the possibility of solar heating.

FOODS

On Wednesday, October 30th, 2019 our group attended the last weekly Westtown Farmers market of the season. Here we got the chance to meet with local Milwaukee vendors. Monique Brisco of Mo’s Salad allowed us to sample some of her foods. She had hot collard greens, wraps, salads, and soups. We hope to work with Monique in the future to implement some of her creative recipes in the cafe using foods grown in the school’s greenhouses.
